The best ISMS software for a small or medium-sized business fits its available people, customer requirements and security needs. A long feature list says little about whether everyday work becomes easier.

This comparison supports shortlisting. We develop Kopexa ourselves. Information about other providers comes from their public product descriptions, checked on 22 October 2026. We have not conducted independent product tests and therefore do not assign rankings.

What matters most to small teams

Many SMEs have nobody working exclusively on the ISMS. Software therefore needs to support handovers between coordination, business departments and technical service providers.

Check these four questions first:

  1. Can a business owner handle their task without lengthy training?
  2. Do evidence, measures and requirements remain traceably connected?
  3. Are approvals and later reviews incorporated into everyday work?
  4. Can a deputy identify the latest decision?

Buying software does not resolve unclear responsibility. Our guide to an ISMS without an internal IT department helps allocate contributions before testing.

Four different approaches for your shortlist

ProviderPublicly described approachWhat to test in the meeting
KopexaGRC platform with measures, evidence, risks and documents; Workforce Hub for employeesCan your small team handle a case from requirement to verified implementation?
KertosCompliance automation across several frameworks with supporting servicesWhich automations and support services are actually included in your offer?
SECJURDigital Compliance Office covering several management topicsHow does the product guide your people through the required workflow?
veriniceISMS and other management topics, including ISO 27001 and IT-GrundschutzWhich product generation and deployment model suit your requirements?

This selection is not exhaustive. A function not mentioned here is not evidence that a provider lacks it. The current offer and your test determine suitability.

Ask every provider to demonstrate the same case

Bring an existing policy, an open measure and associated evidence. Use sanitised data.

Ask how a change is reviewed and approved, how the owner finds their task and how the result can be reviewed later. Then have someone from your team perform the next step themselves.

Fictional example: A business using an external IT provider wants traceable recovery tests. The decisive factor is not the number of ready-made templates. The team must be able to request a test, link its result to a measure and bring an unresolved gap to a decision.

Our ISMS software selection checklist helps record observations consistently.

Compare the total effort

Ask about included frameworks, user roles, required integrations, implementation services and contract terms. Separately record which internal activities remain despite automation.

A time-saving figure from a vendor reference is not a dependable plan for your organisation. Measure which steps disappear in your case and which new maintenance work arises. Also test data export for a future exit.

When Kopexa belongs on your shortlist

Kopexa is relevant if you want to connect certification preparation with ongoing security work: measures hold evidence and are mapped to controls; documents have versions and approvals. The Workforce Hub involves affected employees.

Test whether this fits your team during the two-week guided trial. Choose a complete workflow rather than as many functions as possible.

Which ISMS software is best for SMEs?

The one that meets your essential requirements and can be operated sustainably by your available people. Establish that through a practical comparison using identical test cases.

Are more features automatically better?

No. First check whether your team can handle a relevant case from start to finish. Additional functions help only if you need them and can operate them sensibly.
